To promote Growth & Development on an individual and community level in the areas of Economic, Education, Social and Political Development. We will offer services/programs for the youth and elderly (community trash clean up, conflict resolution, skills training etc) and provide certain benefits to members.

In general board member compensation is not typical. Public charities and private foundations board members can hire someone and pay them a salary to manage the organization. Since Private Family Foundations get their funds from their own family (and don't ask for public donations), there may be situations in which private foundation board members could be compensated for reimbursements or routine service within reason but I recommend talking to a lawyer for nuances.

It sounds like you may have had a negative personal experience and I'm sorry to hear that, if so. However, this is an unfortunate misconception and the facts do not support this. An unfortunate number of nonprofit professionals are under-compensated (especially animal rescue organizations). The misunderstandings around this are part of the "overhead myth" that has caused widespread under-investment in social impact work, resulting in social issues being solved much more slowly than they need to be. There's a great documentary out about this called Uncharitable that I highly recommend!

@@AmberMelanieSmithyes! This is my opinion based off my personal experience and you'll have to excuse me as I'm new to shelters. My primary concern is that these organizations may not be driven by a genuine commitment to animal welfare. Instead, it seems as though there might be other motivations at play, possibly unrelated to the well-being of the animals. The high adoption fees for specific breeds, which are often unaffordable for the average person, suggest a focus on profit rather than facilitating the best outcomes for these animals. I know rescues are non-profit, but I can make the argument that Goodwill is also a non-profit but their CEO makes $500,000 a year. I’m troubled by the thought that the moral compass guiding these rescues could be misaligned with the altruistic mission of animal rescue and care. It's suspicious when a animal rescue is able to secure popular breeds of dogs before the shelter puts notice of adoption. It cost $75 at my local shelter to adopt a dog but the rescue chargers $400 for the same dog.

@@Bandit_X I hear you. But - let's study this together! Let's look at the data. Many local shelters are county run, which means they get government / tax dollars to support their operations. That is not true of independent animal rescues, which means they need to figure out how to pay for all of those same things - facilities, vet care, food, etc. - without tax dollar support. That means the adoption fees may be higher because the costs for that organization are higher and they have to pay for them somehow. Additionally, a large amount of animal rescues are volunteer-run, but even those with paid staff are not overcompensated. There are public nonprofit compensation reports we can refer to to learn more about this. In this 2023 sample report by Candid (cdn.candid.org/pdf/2023-comp-report-sample.pdf), we see that the average CEO of animal-related small nonprofits nationwide makes approximately $44,000 - equivalent to many public servants (and lower than some teachers!). 88% of nonprofits ARE these smaller organizations operating on $500,000 per less, so we can conclude that the majority of these leaders are pretty underpaid by today's standards. Additionally, I can speak from personal nonprofit experience that benefits and time off is not something everyone gets.

In my last comment I stated "I'm troubled by the thought that the moral compass guiding these rescues could be misaligned with the altruistic mission of animal rescue and care" If non-profit animal rescues are underpaid and are not funded by the government then by your logic wouldn't that make them more desperate to find animals to make ends meet? Hence why they only target in demand breeds, which can distract the moral compass. There is a reason why there are not a lot of pitbull rescues even though pitbulls make up majority of the shelters capacity. I want to make it clear I'm all for animal rescues but they are still a business even though it's "non-profit", we know profit still needs to be made for day to day operations. My argument is why go after only certain breeds? Shouldn't a rescue be last resort if the shelter can find a suitable home? This is simply a discussion because I was ignorant to shelters until a negative experience happened to me.

@@Bandit_X If you are referring to rescues that say they are "poodle rescues" or other specific breeds, there are many possible reasons for that, including that the leader setting up the initiative is simply most familiar with that breed. As a nonprofit, they can't just take the money generated in fees and keep it for themselves - all funds go back into the organization (that's just how nonprofits are legally structured - no profits are paid out to stakeholders like you'd see in a business). These leaders are overwhelmed with pet overpopulation and I have never met a single one desperate to find more animals. It's an extremely stressful effort to lead and many are burning out.
